How Seniors Can Stay Safe in the Summer Heat
August 4, 2020
As the summer heat rises, it is important to ensure that seniors are kept safe. The combination of high humidity and high temperatures can be dangerous to the health of seniors—especially those whose medications put them at a higher risk for heat-related illnesses like sunburn, dehydration, or heat stroke. However, the benefits of outdoor activities can do wonders with seniors’ physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing. Before venturing outside in the summer heat, it is important for seniors and their caretakers to remember the following safety tips.
Stay Hydrated
Drinking water is essential to staying healthy, but it is especially important as the temperatures rise. To help stay safe, seniors should minimize the intake of dehydrating, sugary drinks and instead drink plenty of water, at least eight glasses a day. Other drinks that help keep seniors hydrated include lower calorie, electrolyte-replenishing sports drinks, iced tea, and lemonade.
Stay Away from Direct Sunlight
When going outside, it is better to pick shaded spots where there is no direct sunlight. Wearing a hat and sunglasses to protect sensitive senior skin from harmful UV rays is also a factor to consider. It is also suggested that seniors use sunblock with an SPF of 30 or above.
Limit Time Spent Outside
Getting fresh air is good for your health, but seniors should remember to take breaks while doing so. Keeping a water bottle near you, wearing sunblock, and a hat are ways to keep seniors safe while they enjoy the outdoors.
Dress Accordingly
Wearing clothing that is lightweight and light in color also helps keep seniors safe during the summer heat. A hat that is loosely woven with plenty of ventilation is also suggested. While facemasks are an important and necessary accessory in today’s world, it is suggested that seniors avoid wearing these while outside for an extended amount of time as they can cause dizziness and shortness of breath.
Keep Your Home Cool
Closing curtains and blinds is a good way to maintain a comfortable temperature throughout the home. Avoid having the inside temperature above 85 degrees. Instead, set your thermostat to 76 degrees or lower so that the interior temperature is cool enough to decrease a senior’s overheated body temperature when they return from outdoors.
Be Aware of Warning Signs
Keeping a close eye out for signs of exhaustion and dehydration is also key to ensure your senior stays safe. Some of these signs include:
• Nausea
• Headache
• Dizziness
• Rapid pulse
• Weakness
• Confusion
• Fainting
