Communication in Dementia Care

In every walk of life, communication is an incredibly valuable skill. Without communication, the expression of ideas, and emotions become incredibly difficult. Unfortunately, when a loved one is stricken with a disease such as dementia, all aspects of their lives are affected, and it changes how they view the world around them. Communication is one of the most important tools in helping those afflicted with dementia, and there are several styles and approaches one should consider.

You Can Communicate Through More Than Just Words

It is crucial to remember that dementia can make those with it feel disoriented and frightened. It is your job to make them feel comforted and safe. Something as simple as using positive body language, such as smiling can convey a positive tone to put them more at ease.

Less is More

It is best to avoid overloading them with options. Keep your line of dialogue simple and easy to comprehend. Open-ended questions become difficult for them because there are too many choices. Try limiting yourself to yes or no questions to help give them a better pathway for answering.

Eliminate Distractions

Do everything to ensure the focus remains on the conversation. Divided attention makes for strenuous dialog, and it is even worse with dementia patients. Remove all unnecessary stimuli in the room by closing windows, turning off music. Maintaining eye contact and light touch can help establish a stronger connection.

Crack a joke

Despite having dementia, those with it keep their social skills and can understand certain cues. Use this to your advantage and make them laugh. It is a great way to cheer them up and bond over a kind-hearted joke.

Patience is Key

Despite all the ways to help with communication, it is not easy. Because of this, you need to demonstrate patience no matter how difficult things get. When you remain calm and collected in the face of the difficulty they are going through, you are communicating that you are there for them and listening to their emotions. Validate their feelings and make them feel comforted by your presence.
